Arizona Battery for Communication Disorders of Dementia Test Performance: Can This Test Be Used with Caucasian and African American Adolescents with Traumatic Brain Injury?

Evaluation of individuals with traumatic brain injury has included a number of test measures, some of which are adapted for use from other disordered populations. One assessment, the Arizona Battery for Communication Disorders of Dementia (ABCD), has been utilized for this purpose (Bayles & Tomoeda, 1993). Historically, normative data for most assessments of patients with traumatic brain injury and dementia have been developed primarily from Caucasian and middle-class populations. Culturally and linguistically diverse populations often are not reflected in the normative data developed for outcome measures in communication. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were differences in the ABCD score performance between groups by gender, race, or age among individuals between 15 and 25 years of age. The ABCD was given to 97 Caucasian and African American adolescents (15-17:11 years) and young adults (18-25 years). No significant differences were noted between test scores based on gender or between the adolescent and the young adult groups. A significant difference in scores was noted by race, with Caucasians scoring significantly higher than African Americans. Therefore, clinicians utilizing this battery for assessing language function among younger multicultural groups should consider race differences when interpreting scores on this battery, and future investigation of potential effects of race among other disease groups should be conducted.
