Behavioral Dentistry, Second Edition, surveys the vast and absorbing topic of the role of behavioral science in the study and clinical practice of dentistry. An understanding of social sciences has long been a central part of dental education, and essential for developing a clinician’s appreciation of human behavior as it affects efficient dental treatment. This book gathers together contributions from leading experts in each of the major subspecialties of behavioral dentistry. Its aim is not merely to provide the student and clinician with a comprehensive review of the impressive literature or discussion of the theoretical background to the subject, but also with a practical guide to adapting the latest techniques and protocols and applying them to day-to-day clinical practice. This second edition of Behavioral Dentistry discusses biobehavioral processes, including the psychobiology of inflammation and pain, oral health and quality of life, saliva health, and hypnosis in dentistry. The book goes on to examine anxiety, fear, and dental and chronic orofacial pain, and then reviews techniques for designing and managing behavior change. It concludes with a section on professional practice, including care of special needs, geriatric, and diabetic patients, and interpersonal communication in dental education.

BackgroundDiabetes is considered an endemic medical condition with increasing prevalence globally. This tendency has been also detected in Hungary, where the prevalence of diabetes among the adult population reached 7% according to the latest data. Hungary has a leading place in global statistics of oral cancer and there is a high incidence of type-2 diabetes. Because statistically every 11th patient has diabetes in the dental office, dentists should be prepared for the special care of people living with diabetes (PwD). There was established a special oral care unit for PwD in the Semmelweis University Faculty of Dentistry in 2016. This oral care unit has a special interest in scientific research - PhD project about oral health and diabetes -, patient care and also educational collaborations.AimOur aim was to create an educational lecture about oral health and oral care management for the Hungarian general dentists. The lecture contained informations about diabetes in general, the most common oral health complications for PwD and the basic equipments and diabetes treatment options.MethodThe presenter of the educational lecture was also a dentist, who has type-1 diabetes. The lecture was selected as a core element of the Hungarian Medical Chamber Dental Faculty's (HMCDF) postgraduate series, and visited 4 Hungarian cities - Budapest, Miskolc, Gyu0151r, Szekszu00e1rd - in 2016. HMCDF and the Hungarian Diabetes Association (HDA) reviewed and validated the lecture and the informations before it was presented.ResultsThere are approximately 7100 dentists in Hungary, and around 5000 of them are active. In 2016 more than 2000 Hungarian dentists (40%) was able to participate in the educational lecture, which was specialized for dental emergencies and basic knowledge about the oral care management of PwD. The participant dentists made advocacy activity by lifting up blue papers - blue symbolized diabetes - for the support of the World Diabetes Day 2016. Discussion40% of the active dentists in Hungary participated in the special lecture about oral health and diabetes. We would like to continue this initiative in Hungary, as well as internationally. In 2017 we are going to continue our successful educational project with the help of the IDF's Young Leaders in Diabetes Program!

Oral health loss is one of the major problems existing all over the world and is one of the top causes of death when unmanaged. The oral cavity is home to numerous pathogenic microorganisms, some of which are responsible for the progression and development of various systemic diseases such as cancer, diabetes and myocardial infarction. Worldwide, 60–90% of school children and nearly 100% of adults have dental cavities, often leading to pain and discomfort. There are implications for the global economy as well, due to the continuous burden of investing resources to maintain oral hygiene. Not surprisingly, developing countries are disproportionally affected. There is thus an urgent need to develop economical solutions for the treatment of oral diseases. The trend of exploring plants or plant-derived compounds for the prevention and cure of death-causing diseases is on the rise. The use of traditional medicine for oral diseases is an ancient practice in which medicinal herbs play a major role. Medicinal plants have minimal side effects and no denigrating properties. Accordingly the use of medicinal plants to curtail oral pathogens has been reported by a number of studies. The present book updates the issues related to oral health, oral diseases and the role of medicinal plants in overcoming orally-derived health problems. We also highlight the knowledge gaps in oral health related problems with medicinal plants as one of the solutions. Our ultimate goal is to encourage future research and application of medicinal plants for economical and efficient treatment of oral diseases.
