Sir Richard Doll, FRS, FRCP ICRF Cancer Research Studies Unit Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, UK The twentieth century has seen few changes more remarkable than the improvement in health that has occurred nearly everywhere, most spectacularly in the economically developed countries. In these countries improved nutrition, better housing, the control ofinfection, smaller family sizes, and higher standards of education have brought about a situation in which more than 97% of all liveborn children can expect to survive the first half ofthe three score years and ten that formerly was regarded as the allotted span oflife. From then on, however, the position is less satisfactory. Some improvement has occurred; but the proportion of survivors who die prematurely, that is under 70 years of age, varies from 25% to over 50% in men and from 13% to 28% in women, the extremes in both sexes being recorded, respectively, in Japan and Hungary. Most of these deaths under 70 years of age must now be called premature, even in Japan. For most of them are not the result of any inevitable aging process, but instead are the consequences of diseases (or types of trauma) that have lower-often much lower-age-specific incidence rates in many of the least developed countries.

Health Policy written by Ann Wall and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-24 with Medical categories.

The health care system in Britain at the beginning of the twenty-first century is being subjected to radical rethinking. Health Policy examines how the NHS has developed to the point it has reached today as well as placing it in the wider context of the kinds of health care which are available to people in Britain. It looks at key issues which have arisen in the provision of health care such as rationing, the operation of interest groups, relationships between the public, voluntary and private sectors and whether the NHS has delivered care equally to all sectors of the population. In this second edition, the authors pay particular attention to the policy changes introduced by the Labour government following it selection in 1997 and places these within a wider discussion of the concept of a primary care-led system. Health Policy will be especially useful to readers who wish to inform themselves about what is happening in the NHS today or to deepen their understanding of current developments through an appreciation of how the health care system has evolved over the past fifty years. It includes useful summaries of key points, guides to further reading and a glossary of key terms.

Electronic communications are already revolutionizing the delivery of health care in homes and communities. The medium will have increasing impact on the delivery of health care in response to the pressure to use limited resources cost-effectively. To date much of telematics in health care has focused on hospital-based bio-medicine. In this book a case is made for reorientation of telematic activity towards the use of "low tech" (social) technologies supported by "Health for All" philosophies. This book uses several case studies of pilot schemes to illustrate how the models can be applied in a variety of settings. Experience of telematics in America, Canada, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal and Wales is shared for an international readership of innovators in health care management.
