INTRODUCTION Lack of health literacy (the ability of the individual to find and use information to make informed health decisions) has been named one of the biggest problems in the United States by the surgeon general and the Institute of Medicine [1, 2]. Low health literacy affects 90 million people nationwide and costs the United States $58 billion each year [2]. A 2008 report confirmed that the odds of seeking Internet health information were lower for those with lower household income [3].
